Your Responsibilities
The Aquatics Facility at ISTA is a breeding facility for zebrafish Danio rerio and the African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis), supporting cutting-edge research in developmental biology and neuroscience. We are seeking a dedicated and highly motivated colleague to join our team. You will contribute to the expansion of our technical capabilities (e.g., cryopreservation) and enhancing user management (e.g., colony and line management).
- Develop, implement, and optimize laboratory workflows, including genotyping (e.g., tissue biopsies, DNA extraction, PCR), and cryopreservation
- Oversee the technical and resource management of aquatic systems, including monitoring water chemistry, filtration, and temperature control
- Provide support to animal caretakers with their daily tasks, such as feeding, breeding, and cleaning, as needed
- Manage animal handling software, ensuring proper user training and conducting regular checks on the quality of data entered into the system
- Collaborate closely with researchers to ensure the sustainable management of experimental lines and efficient use of space and resources
- Monitor animal welfare conditions and maintain accurate records
- Conceptualize, create, and implement rules, guidelines, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure the smooth operation of the facility
- Participate in weekend shifts and on-call duties to ensure continuous facility operations, including addressing any urgent issues related to animal care or housing systems
Your Profile
- Degree in Biology, Zoology, or a related field and/or equivalent work experience
- Experience working with zebrafish, African clawed frog, or other aquatic model organisms is highly preferred
- Knowledge of aquatic systems management and basic animal care practices
- Experience in basic molecular biology techniques (PCR, cloning, etc.) is a plus
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently
- A strong commitment to research ethics and animal welfare standards
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team
- Excellent command of English and German, written and spoken
- Willingness to work weekends and participate in on-call duties as required
