Kilpisjärvi Biological Station offers two Erasmus+ trainee position for the upcoming field season from May / June to October / November 2025 . The length and dates of the internship are flexible. DL for the application is 15 th of January 2025
Kilpisjärvi Biological Station (69°03'N; 20°50' is Helsinki University´s northernmost field station, surrounded by wilderness and high fells. The nature in the region is unique due to the areas young geology and distinct climate affected by its northern location , altitude, and closeness to the Norwegian Sea Kilpisjärvi is situated in the cultural region traditionally inhabited by the Sámi people, just on the border of Norway and Sweden.
Long term monitoring forms the core of research at our s tation . As an intern y ou r main task will be participating in monitoring and maintaining long term research areas and plots, collecting and handling samples , data management as a part of our field team.
Our long term monitoring projects are, for example, vegetation studies, survey of cavity nesting birds, lake Kilpisjärvi fishery research and LIFEPLAN biodiversity research.
As an i ntern you will also assist visiting research groups and participate in general tasks at the station if needed. Regular posting in station´s social media of the activities you´re involved with will be part of your work.
We require our trainee to have:
- A good command in Finnish or English
- Outdoor skills
- The ability to do physically demanding work
- Willingness to operate on a boat
- Positive attitude, weather resistance and problem solving skills
The following traits are looked highly upon but are not mandatory for the applicant:
- Previous experience in field work and in collecting, handling and measuring samples
- Skills in bird and /or plant identification
- Nature and outdoor related hobbies
- Driver’s license
- Ability to drive an outboard motor boat
You can apply for the internship position if you are a university student or recently graduated, and you are eligible for Erasmus+ or equivalent funding . The internship is unpaid, but you may receive academic credit to apply to your degree program As an intern you apply for a visiting student status from the University of Helsinki. We offer the trainee free lodging in station´s dormitories and discounted student price s in the eatery The intern is responsible for the costs of travel to Kilpisjärvi.
