Job opportunity:
PhD position at the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering
in the field of urban water management with nature based solutions
The Department of Environmental Civil Engineering of the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering (UL FGG) has a 4-year PhD position available in the field of urban water management. The candidate will be trained within the Research Programme Water Science and Technology and Geotechnical Engineering: Tools and Methods for Process Analyses and Simulations, and Development of Technologies.
The research topic for the open PhD position is focused on further development of nature-based solutions for circular water management, including multifunctional technologies at building scale like green walls and green roofs as well as solutions for sustainable urban water management at city scale. Depending on the background of the candidate the PhD topic can cover and specialize in green walls and green roofs technology with multiple functions including (waste)water treatment i.e.: research on optimal substrates, setups, regime flows etc. or in the field of urban drainage including modelling (water quantity and quality) of the urban water cycle to optimize the use of nature-based solutions, with emphasis on evaluating the impacts on existing urban water infrastructure.
The duties of the candidate are as follows:
- Enrolment in the doctoral study program Built Environment of the UL FGG, or Environmental Protection run at the UL. Suitable doctoral study program will be selected based on the candidate background and preferences.
- Completing the PhD in 4 years
- Conduct quantitative and qualitative research on the selected topic
- Using, testing, and evaluating experimental (and modelling) tools on existing and new systems as well as setting up experimental sites.
- Publish and present results both at international conferences and in scientific journals
- Collaborate in on-going projects of the research group related to the PhD topic
- Working with students on topic related tasks.
Required selection criteria:
- Education must correspond to a five-year degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master’s level.

Preferred selection criteria
Educational background in environmental/civil/mechanical/chemical engineering or natural sciences. Priority will be given to candidates with in-depth theoretical knowledge in the field of the dissertation and with practical skills to carry out the experimental work of the dissertation (experiment, laboratory, field work). Experiences in publications in international scientific journals and conferences will be considered an advantage. Proof of active knowledge of English language is desirable.
Salary and conditions
The position starts on the 1st of October. PhD positions (young researchers) are categorised in 35th class of the salary system for public employees in Slovenia which corresponds to 1 746.13 EUR before tax. The system allows for salary raise, depending on the candidate's work load.
