We are a leading research organisation in the area wood and wood-related renewable resources in Europe. Our core competences are materials research and process technology along the complete value chain – from raw material to finished products. We develop methods and basics and perform applied research on the economy-science interface, in order to enable resource-efficient management in the circular bioeconomy.
For support in our cooperative research project in the team “Wood Composites & Digital Transformation” in Tulln, we are looking for a:
Junior researcher for a dissertation in data science for wood tracing (PhD)
Your work will be focused on the integration and application of data science technologies for tracing wood along its value chain. Together with partners from industry and science, approaches are developed and evaluated at laboratory scale. The PhD thesis will be supervised at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna.
Your responsibility:
- Conducting research in computer vision techniques to trace wood using patterns of its unique characteristics – e.g. knots, year rings, etc. – and the application of newest data science technologies in the field of AI
- Design, implementation and evaluation of experiments
- Scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals and at international scientific conferences
Your qualification:
- University degree (master’s, diploma), preferably in Statistics, Engineering, Technical Mathematics, IT or Wood Science
- Interest in wood anatomy and wood physics
- First experiences in data science and code development (e.g. Python, MATLAB, R, etc.)
- Good knowledge in spoken and written English
